Week 10 Cognitive Engagements

Cognitive Engagements of the Day

Remember it is not important whether theses activities are easy or difficult.

What matters is the participant goes through the steps. Throughout the week

they will engage in numerous cognitive processes that will help

build and strengthen their cognitive reserve and increase neuro-plasticity.


Cognitive Engagement

Kit Supplies Needed:

Shape Puzzle

Instructions:

  • Remove the shapes from the puzzle.
  • Put them to your right side.
  • Puzzle pieces should be colored-side up.
  • Put the shapes back in the puzzle that are the same color as a banana
  • Put the shapes back in the puzzle that are the color of a firetruck.
  • Put the shapes back in the puzzle that are the color you think of when you think of money.
  • Put the shapes back in the puzzle that are the color that indicates a sad mood.

Comments:

AP: Don’t correct them as long as they are putting a shape in the puzzle.



Cognitive Engagement

Kit Supplies Needed:

2 Gloves

Instructions:

  • Use only your left hand to put a glove on your right hand.
  • With the glove still on your right hand, put the other glove on your left hand.
  • Take off the glove from your right hand.
  • Take off one glove from your left hand.
  • Close your eyes.
  • Take off the remaining glove.

Comments:

Do not throw the gloves away.

Kit Supplies Needed:

5 Set Game Cards

Instructions:

  • Lay all five cards in front of you with the shapes facing up.
  • How many color matches do you have?
  • Put them together.
  • Mix up the card order.
  • How many shade matches do you have?
  • How many shape matches do you have?
  • Put them together.
  • Mix up the card order.
  • How many different colors do you have?
  • Put them together.
  • Mix up the card order.
  • How many different shades do you have?
  • How many different shapes do you have?

Cognitive Engagement

Kit Supplies Needed:

5 Bowls

1 Colored Sponge

5 Dice

Instructions:

  • Put the bowls in front of you in a row.
  • Toss one die at a time into each bowl.
  • Take each die out of the bowl and lay it in front of the bowl with the number you rolled facing up.
  • Working right to left, with your nondominant hand, toss the sponge into a bowl.
  • Say the number on the die in front of the bowl out loud.
  • Name (the number on your die) things in these categories: 1. Things you find in a garden. 2. Things you would never eat. 3. Things that make you happy. 4. People in your family. 5. Items found in a car.

Comments:

AP: This exercise involves several cognitive processes. Be patient! Only help with steps they cannot complete. Repeat the exercise as time allows. People can be mothers, fathers, etc instead of named people.


Cognitive Engagement Exercise

Kit Supplies Needed:

Alphabet Letters

Instructions:

  • Lay 20 random letters in a row (face down if using tiles).
  • Pick every other one.
  • Put the letters that are not turned over back in a pile to the left.
  • Do you see a word within the letters?
  • Add the letters on the left back into the pile.
  • If using tiles, turn them over one at a time.
  • Make as many words as possible using all the letters.
  • You can make individual words or use a crossword format.
  • Words may share letters.
  • Blanks are wild if using tiles.

Comments:

AP: Use less or more letters to decrease or increase the difficulty level of the exercise.
