4. Brainercise for Week 11

TIP

Remember, it is not important whether these exercises are easy or difficult.

Over the course of the program, the participant will engage in numerous cognitive processes which is what will keep the healthy areas of their brain active.

This is what can build and strengthen their cognitive reserve and increase their brain’s neuroplasticity to help slow dementia-related decline.


TIP

There may be steps that they cannot complete depending on what area(s) of the brain have been damaged.

Use the Process-Focused Strategy Phrases to encourage them as much as possible and only complete the steps that they are unable to complete at all.

What matters is the participant attempts each of the steps to the best of their ability at this moment.

Complete the Seated Stretch exercises before beginning to increase blood flow and oxygen to the brain.

TIP

Before beginning the exercises, have the participant look back and forth to the right and then to the left a few times without moving the head.

Science suggests this movement increases concentration and problem-solving ability.


Brainercise 11a

Kit Supplies Needed:

Notebook Paper

Pen (see below for color)

Instructions:

  • Pick a pen color that is patriotic.
  • Write the words God Bless America at the top of the paper.
  • Make as many words can you make using the letters in the phrase.

Comments:

2-letter words are okay.

AP: To increase the difficulty, change the number of letters each new word must contain.


Brainercise 11b

Kit Supplies Needed:

none

Instructions:

  • Clap your hands in front of you.
  • Cross your arms like an “X” and pat the top of your thighs.
  • Clap your hands in front of you.
  • Cross your arms like an “x” and touch your shoulders.
  • The sequence is clap – cross arms – touch thighs – clap – cross arms – touch shoulders.
  • See how many times you can follow this pattern without goofing.

Comments:

AP: Try doing it fast, then slow, then fast again all in the same attempt.  Switch it up and touch thighs (with arms crossed), shoulders (with arms uncrossed), then clap last. Continue alternating patterns you decide on.

This is tricky. Do this with them. Laugh together, don’t correct, when a mistake is made.


Brainercise 11c

Kit Supplies Needed:

Pipe Cleaners

Instructions:

  • Spell your first name out loud.
  • Using the pipe cleaners, form each of the letters in your name.
  • Gently mix up the letters.
  • Lay them in a straight line in front of you.
  • Close your eyes and try to spell your name by feeling the letters.

Comments:

AP: This is a difficult exercise so do not expect it to be exactly right. If this is impossible for them to get any of these correct with their eyes closed, ask them to do it with their eyes open. Spell their last name and do the exercise again for an additional cognitive boost.


Brainercise 11d

Kit Supplies Needed:

Cones

Geoboard

Instructions:

  • Turn the geoboard so the pegs are showing.
  • Put the orange cone in the bottom left corner.
  • Put the red cone in the top left corner.
  • Put the green cone in the top right corner.
  • Put the blue cone in the bottom right corner.
  • Put the yellow cone to your non-dominant side.
  • With your non-dominant hand, touch the top of each cone on the board beginning with the blue cone.
  • As you touch each cone, say the color of the cone that comes next.
  • After you get back to the blue cone, switch hands and redo the exercise.

Comments:

AP: Go as slowly or as fast with the directions as they need you to.


Brainercise 11e

Kit Supplies Needed:

Dry Erase Folder

Dry Erase Marker

Instructions:

  • AP: Write abbreviations listed below on the folder one at a time.
  • Give hints as needed.
  • Erase the abbreviation before adding a new one.
  • What do you think these abbreviations stand for?

ROFL: Rolling on (the) floor laughing

ICYMI: In case you missed it

TL;DR: Too long, didn’t read

LMK: Let me know

NVM: Nevermind

TGIF: Thank goodness it’s Friday

TBH: To be honest

TBF: To be frank

This can be a silly exercise when you use your imagination!


Brainercise 11f

Nostalgia Exercise Instructions:

    • Listen to or sing the suggested Nostalgia Song or one of your choice as many times as you like and time allows.
    • What were you doing in life when this song was popular?
    • How does hearing this song now make you feel?


Brainercise 11g

Neuron Exercise Instructions:

    • Listen to the suggested Neuron Song or one of your choice.
    • While listening, focus on the lyrics (or melody).
    • Next, listen during the verses or main melody.
    • Try to sing along during the chorus (the part that repeats).
    • It does not matter if you sing the lyrics correctly or not.
    • Repeat the process as many times as time and preference allow.
