3. Brainercise for Week 22

TIP

Remember, it is not important whether these exercises are easy or difficult.

Over the course of the program, the participant will engage in numerous cognitive processes which is what will keep the healthy areas of their brain active.

This is what can build and strengthen their cognitive reserve and increase their brain’s neuroplasticity to help slow dementia-related decline.


TIP

There may be steps that they cannot complete depending on what area(s) of the brain have been damaged.

Use the Process-Focused Strategy Phrases to encourage them as much as possible and only complete the steps that they are unable to complete at all.

What matters is the participant attempts each of the steps to the best of their ability at this moment. 


TIP

Before beginning the exercises, have the participant look back and forth to the right and then to the left a few times without moving the head.

Science suggests this movement increases concentration and problem-solving ability.


Brainercise 22a

Kit Supplies Needed:

Pegboard

Rubberbands

Instructions:

  • Starting in the bottom right corner, lay a rubber band around each peg until all the pegs have been circled.

Comments:

The rubber bands are not being wrapped around the pegs in this exercise.


Brainercise 22b

Kit Supplies Needed:

4 Baking Cups

Pen

Notebook Paper

Instructions:

  • Lay 4 baking cups anywhere you want to on the paper.
  • Use the pen to trace each cup.
  • Remove the baking cups.
  • Connect each circle to one another by drawing a line from one to the other.
  • What does your shape resemble?

Brainercise 22c

Kit Supplies Needed:

Cones

Instructions:

  • Line up the cones in any color you want.
  • Use the guide below to touch the cone.
  • Touch each cone as fast as you can.

Red: touch with your palm

Green: touch with your index finger

Blue: touch with your pinkie finger

Orange: touch with your thumb

Yellow: clap instead of touching

Comments:

AP: Call out the color and the instructions. Speed up as tolerated. You may not have all the colors mentioned in the instructions.


Brainercise 22d

Kit Supplies Needed:

Popsicle Sticks

Instructions:

  • Stack them in columns by color.
  • Make the columns as neat as possible.
  • Put them back in a mixed-up pile.
  • Restack them into 4 columns using alternating colors.

Brainercise 22e

Kit Supplies Needed:

Mini Boggle

Instructions:

  • Shake the Boggle.
  • How many rows have at least 3 vowels in them?
  • How many rows have the letter “l”?
  • How many rows have a 3 letter word spelled correctly?
  • How many rows have no words spelled correctly?

Comments:

AP: Call out the letters if they can’t read them.
