3. Brainercise for Week 14


Remember, it is not important whether these exercises are easy or difficult.

Over the course of the program, the participant will engage in numerous cognitive processes which is what will keep the healthy areas of their brain active.

This is what can build and strengthen their cognitive reserve and increase their brain’s neuroplasticity to help slow dementia-related decline.


There may be steps that they cannot complete depending on what area(s) of the brain have been damaged.

Use the Process-Focused Strategy Phrases to encourage them as much as possible and only complete the steps that they are unable to complete at all.

What matters is the participant attempts each of the steps to the best of their ability at this moment. 


Complete the Seated Stretch exercises before beginning to increase blood flow and oxygen to the brain.

Before beginning the exercises, have the participant look back and forth to the right and then to the left a few times without moving the head.

Science suggests this movement increases concentration and problem-solving ability.

Brainercise 14a

Kit Supplies Needed:



  • Answer the riddles.
  1. What has to broken before you can use it?
  2. What question can you never answer “yes” to?
  3. What gets wet while drying?
  4. I shave every day but my beard stays the same. Who am I?
  5. What kind of band never plays music?
  6. What has a head and a tail but no body?
  7. I am an odd number. Take away a letter and I become even. What number am I?
  8. A little girl goes to the store and buys one dozen eggs. As she is going home, all but three break. How many eggs are left unbroken?
  9. What five-letter word becomes shorter when you add two letters to it?
  10. I am the beginning of everything, the end of everywhere. I’m the beginning of eternity, the end of time and space. What am I?


Give small hints if needed.


  1. An egg.
  2. “Are you asleep”?
  3. A towel.
  4. A barber.
  5. A rubber band.
  6. A coin.
  7. Seven.
  8. 3
  9. Short
  10. The letter “e”.

Brainercise 14b

Kit Supplies Needed:


11 Pipe cleaners


  • Put on left glove then the right glove.
  • Pick out 11 pipe cleaners from the pile with your nondominant hand only.
  • Combine the pipe cleaners in groups of 3.
  • After you have groups of 3 lay them in their group lengthwise on the table.
  • Take one of the leftover pipe cleaners and add it to any group.
  • Then add the other leftover pipe cleaner to the group on the far left.
  • Remove one pipe cleaner from the center group and add it to the group on the right.
  • Remove one pipe cleaner from the center group and add it to the group on the left.
  • Continue this pattern until the center group is empty.


If you have time, connect all the pipe cleaners together by twisting the ends together.

Brainercise 14c

Kit Supplies Needed:

Bingo Card

Dry erase folder

Dry Erase Marker

2 Dice


  • Put the Bingo card into the dry erase folder.
  • Put numbers between 2 and 36 in each square using the dry erase marker.
  • Roll the dice.
  • Use the numbers on the dice OR use a mathematical equation to obtain the number in the squares.
  • As you “make a number”, erase the number.
  • Continue until the board is empty.


Brainercise 14d

Kit Supplies Needed:

5 pieces of Notebook Paper



  • Write a different category on the top of each piece of notebook paper on the top line in the center of the page: places, adjectives, people, things, songs.
  • Name everything you can think of that makes you think of patriotism.


Brainercise 14e

Kit Supplies Needed:

5 White Paper Tags

Ink Pens

Cup or Bowl


  • On one side of the tag, write a number that is less than 9 but more than 3.
  • Use the same color of pen to write each number.
  • On the opposite side of each tag write a letter in different colored ink.
  • Put the tags in the cup or bowl and stir them around 4 times.
  • Close your eyes and pick 2 tags at a time.
  • Open your eyes and put them on the table with one number and one letter showing.
  • Name (the number you drew) (the color of the letter that you drew) items that start with the letter.


For example, if you drew a “9” and an “H” that was written in blue you’d name 9 blue things that start with the letter “h”.

Nostalgia Exercise Instructions:

    • Listen to or sing the suggested Nostalgia Song or one of your choice as many times as you like and time allows.
    • What were you doing in life when this song was popular?
    • How does hearing this song now make you feel?

Brainercise 14g

Neuron Exercise Instructions:

    • Listen to the suggested Neuron Song or one of your choice.
    • While listening, focus on the lyrics (or melody).
    • Next, listen during the verses or main melody.
    • Try to sing along during the chorus (the part that repeats).
    • It does not matter if you sing the lyrics correctly or not.
    • Repeat the process as many times as time and preference allow.
